The Basilica of San Paolo is a church in the center of Cantù in Lombardy , Italy . The provost church belongs to the Archdiocese of Milan through the pastoral community of San Vincenzo . It is dedicated to the Apostle Paul and bears the title of a minor basilica . The church was originally built in the Romanesque style at the end of the 11th century on a hill above the city.

history

The Romanesque building was extensively redesigned as a new provost church, especially in the second half of the 16th century. A portico that encircled the building from the portico to the sacristy was demolished to create two side aisles. Instead of a wooden coffered ceiling , barrel vaults made of bricks were drawn in. The portico was replaced by a pronaos . At the end of the 18th century, the architect Carlo Felice Soave completed the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

In 1950 the Church of San Paolo was opened by Pope Pius XII. raised to the rank of minor basilica.

Architecture and equipment

The three-aisled basilica is accessible via an imposing staircase. The main nave is characterized by stained glass by the painter Luigi Migliavacca (1930). The choir shows a number of depictions of St. Paul, such as the fresco of the vault from the 19th century. The stained glass windows of the chancel depict the saint during the fall from his horse, conversion and persecution in Rome. The church also houses a painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint Apollonia of Alexandria . Fourteen medallions are attached above the Serizzo columns between the naves , depicting the apostles and Saints Mark, Luke and Paul. A painting by Camillo Procaccini (1551–1629) is kept in the sacristy .

Campanile

The church tower served as a tower for the nearby Pietrasanta Castle in the Middle Ages. The lower part of quarry stone is still Romanesque. It was given a two-story brick bell tower in the 16th century, which is surmounted by a high brick spire designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi . The 20th century chime includes five bells.
