Rainer of Pisa

Rainer von Pisa (Latin Raynerius , Italian San Ranieri ; * around 1116 in Pisa ; † 1160 ibid) was a hermit and monk . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church . His feast day is celebrated on June 17th . He is the patron saint of the city of Pisa.

Life

Rainer was the son of a wealthy merchant in Pisa. In his youth he lived a life full of worldly joys. On a sea voyage he met a hermit Albert and from then on lived a life of asceticism , penance and mortification . A legend tells of how he unmasked a wine fan.

Around 1146 he went to the Holy Land , where he lived exclusively on charitable gifts. In 1153 he returned to Pisa and lived in the monastery of San Vito. Even during his lifetime, miracles were attributed to him, he had visions and cast out evil spirits . He died in 1161.

Adoration

A cult arose immediately after his death, in 1284 he became the patron saint of the city and archbishopric of Pisa . In 1591 he was buried in the Cathedral of Pisa , where he lies in a glass shrine .
