history

Lettering on the Hera sanatorium

In 1905 the private medical and maternity hospital “Sanatorium Hera” was founded by the gynecologist Doctor Hugo Hübel. Medical focal points in the building constructed by the architects Alfred Wildback (wing in Löblichgasse, built 1905) and W. Pleski and Zeeh (wing in Säulengasse, built 1906) were obstetrics and surgical gynecology.

The sanatorium was acquired on August 1, 1937 by the health care institution of the city officials and converted from the house specializing in obstetrics into a modern private hospital.

After the building complex was destroyed in a bomb attack on March 22, 1945, the Hera sanatorium was rebuilt in an expanded form between 1946 and the reopening on May 21, 1949. At that time, Hera was the first hospital in Vienna with a colostomy tract . Another innovation for patients was the ability to listen to the radio over radio lines at the hospital beds.

The Vienna City Hall correspondent reported on 28 November 1950 on the use of a new, from the United States coming narcotic called Trilen in dental treatment that has been used with great success. It was noted with amusement that after tooth extraction, the patients were mostly as amused as if they had drunk about two quarters of wine. For some, the effect is said to have been even stronger.

From 1979 the Hera sanatorium was brought up to date. In 1987, a new building was built and additional outpatient departments were set up.

A report of the Court of Auditors published in 2006 and relating to 2004 caused a great political stir in Vienna . It criticized the poor capacity utilization (64.3 percent on average) and, at the same time, high personnel costs due to too many care, operating and administrative staff. One of the recommendations of the Court of Auditors was to withdraw from inpatient care. Closer cooperation with the KAV was also discussed .
