The Exter sand pit is a nature reserve with a size of around 2.2 hectares in the town of Vlotho , part of the district of Herford , in the district of Exter . The area is managed with the number HF-036 and is located in the immediate vicinity of the nature reserve Salze-Glimketal . It is the smallest nature reserve in the Herford district ( as of 2011) and protects a habitat in a former sand pit . A complex of wood (alder and willow), fallow land (including pioneer lawns, dwarf bin lawns), forest (oaks, beeches) and a still water has developed here. In particular, the nutrient-poor soils, which are rare in the Ravensberger Land, have led to vegetation that is rare for this region.
