The area designated as a natural monument is the abandoned part of a large sand quarry with an approximately 10 m × 150 m vertical profile wall of the Upper Sea Molasse ( Miocene or Lower Burdigalium from around 20 million years ago). Their layer sequences and special sediment structure with fine and medium-grain, hardly solidified sands contain fossils such as shark teeth , snails and mussels .

The protected area offers the flora and fauna a hemi xerothermal (from ancient Greek ἥμι hemi "half", ξηρός xerós "dry, dry" and θερμός thermós "warm") habitat . In the southern area, where sand is still being mined, a colony of terns has established itself .
