The disused sand pit has been designated as a protected landscape component since February 1, 2003 . Here, on an area of around 4.7 hectares, different habitats are close together. The diverse structures offer a habitat for numerous animals and plants. The spectrum ranges from extremely dry and nutrient-poor sand areas to wet ditches with moist alder forest to open water areas. The area offers a suitable habitat for endangered species such as the natterjack toad , crested newt , yellow-bellied toad , grass snake , dune tiger beetle , sundew , rush , wintergreen , stendelwort , mountain sandbell , marsh bear moss and Siberian iris .

The area is subject to constant change ( succession ) of the emerging communities. Initially, pioneer plants colonized the abandoned areas. They were then replaced by shrubs and shrubs and ultimately replaced by trees. As a result, vital open locations are also disappearing for plants and animals.

The Burgthann branch of the Bund Naturschutz has been looking after the former sand pit since 2005 . The area is regularly cleared of bushes, trees are removed and the reeds are mowed to prevent silting up of the bank zones. It is important to keep the original open areas as living space.
