The nature reserve Sandhauser Brake and Schwarze Brake is located in the northern urban area of the Lower Saxony independent city of Delmenhorst in the natural spatial unit of the Thedinghauser Vorgeest, which is part of the natural spatial region of the Weser-Aller flatland .

Nature reserve

The nature reserve was placed under nature protection by the council of the city of Delmenhorst on December 14, 2010, after large parts of the area had already been designated as a nature reserve. It bears the statistical code NSG WE 277 and covers an area of 20.66 hectares. Another nature reserve in Delmenhorst is the Hemmelskamp .

Emergence

Both the Sandhauser and the Schwarze Brake are bodies of water that were formed as brakes when dyke broke in February 1572 during a catastrophic flood from the Middle and Upper Weser area . During this flood, the Geigensee, partially located in the Hemmelskamp nature reserve, and the Kruschenbrake in Hemmelskamp wood were also created. Due to the sandy subsoil of the waters located on the Delmenhorster Vorgeest, a subsection of the Thedinghauser Vorgeest, extremely deep pools could arise here during the flood, which could no longer be closed with the means at that time and made it necessary to relocate the dike line to the east. The remains of the historic dike line can still be clearly seen in the area.

nature and landscape

The Sandhauser and Schwarze Brake are still waters with partly extensive floating leaf and reed zones, partly with pronounced silting areas as well as reed and large sedge stands and swamp bushes. They are surrounded a. of forest stands in which oaks dominate, but also beech and ash trees .

Wildlife

The nature reserve is of particular importance as a livelihood for a total of seven bat species that are found here or that use the area for hunting. These are the noctule bat , broad-winged , rough-skinned , dwarf bat , water bat , pond bat and brown long-eared bat .

In the waters find the amphibian species toad , marsh frog and frog spawning habitats. Dragonfly species such as the great shell-eye , bat-azure virgin and little rush virgin as well as the endangered tip spot also occur here.
