Saint George's Cathedral (Lviv)
The St George's Cathedral is a church and cathedral of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and is located in the Ukrainian city of Lviv .
history
Today's cathedral was built on the site of the Gothic church built in 1363–1437 and demolished in 1743–1744. It was built according to the design of the architect Bernhard Meretyn . The foundation stone was laid in 1744. Two years later, the Greek Catholic bishop Athanasius Scheptyzkyj (1686–1746) died, who determined his estate to finance the construction work. After Meretin's death in 1759, the construction work was directed by Klemens Fesinger until 1764. The exterior architecture was completed in 1772. The sculptures are the work of the Butschatsch sculptor Johann Georg Brush . The interior is designed in the style of the late baroque . The cathedral houses an icon of the Theotokos , by Bishop Iosyf Shumliansky was brought to Lvov. It is considered a precious relic .
In 1996 a restoration took place on the 400th anniversary of the Church Union of Brest . The cathedral thus represents the binding symbol of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with the Roman Catholic Church . In the St. George's Cathedral are the resting places of the Greek Catholic Cardinals and Metropolitans Sylwester Sembratowicz , Andrej Scheptyzkyj , Jossyf Slipyj , Volodymyr Sternyuk and Myroslaw Lyubachivskyi .
