Sylwester Cardinal Sembratowicz also Sembratovyc ( Ukrainian Сильвестр Сембратович , Polish Sylwester Sembratowycz ) (born September 3, 1836 in Deszinca , Congress Poland ; † August 4, 1898 in Lemberg ) was a Cardinal and Archbishop of Lemberg of the Ukrainian Catholic Church .

Life

Sylwester Sembratowicz was born into a Ruthenian family. He was ordained priest on November 1, 1860 in Rome at the age of 24 years.

At the age of 42, on February 28, 1879, Sembratowicz was appointed titular bishop of Iuliopolis and auxiliary bishop in the Archeparchy of Lemberg . The episcopal ordination took place by his uncle Josyf Sembratowicz in the Saint George's Cathedral in Lemberg on April 20, 1879; Co- consecrators were Franciszek Ksawery Wierzchlejski , Archbishop of Lviv of the Latin Rite , and Jan Stupnyckj , Ruthenian Greek Catholic Bishop of Przemyśl .

He was appointed Archbishop of Lemberg on March 27, 1885, at the age of 48. The elevation to cardinal took place on November 29, 1895, as well as the appointment to cardinal priest with the allocation of the titular church of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio .

In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , as Lviv Metropolitan, he had a virile vote in the Galician Landtag .

Sylwester Cardinal Sembratowicz died on August 4, 1898, at the age of 61, in Lemberg and was buried in the Saint George's Cathedral there.
