Johann Georg Brush (Polish Jan Jerzy Pinzel, Ukrainian Іван Георгій Пінзель , † 1761 or 1762 ) was a sculptor and wood sculptor of the Baroque. He was probably of German or Bohemian descent and worked mainly in Red Ruthenia , an area that then belonged to the Kingdom of Poland and is now in western Ukraine .

Live and act

There is no further information about his curriculum vitae. From 1750 to 1761, under the patronage of Kaniv Starost Nikolaus Basilius Potocki, he was active in the construction of numerous churches and palaces, in collaboration with the Lviv architect Bernhard Meretin , who since 1745 was the court architect of King August III .

Brush later settled in Butschatsch . His first sculptures for the town hall in Butschatsch and the Greek Catholic Arch-Cathedral Saint George in Lviv were carved in stone. Other works are wooden high altars in the Roman Catholic churches of the Immaculate Conception Mary in Horodenka (1752–1755), the All Saints Church in Hodowyzja (around 1758) and in Monastyryska (1761), in Hwisdez and in St. Martin's Church in Lemberg .

He left about forty students. After Brush's death, his workshop in Butschatsch continued to work because his students continued the work he had started.

Brushes' works show the stylistic features of the South German Rococo , with strong expressiveness.

During the Soviet rule (1940–1990), many churches were closed and neglected and the wooden sculptures were often used as firewood. It was not until 1960 that the Ukrainian art historian Borys Vosnyzkyj (1926–2012) managed to save some wooden sculptures. After 1990 he succeeded in founding a Johann-Georg-Brush Museum in the former Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Lviv.
