Bernhard Meretyn

Bernhard Meretyn (also Merderer, Merettini, Meretynych; * in the 17th century; † 1759 ) was a Lviv architect. He was probably of German descent and is considered to be the pioneer of the Rococo style in the Kingdom of Poland . He worked in Lviv from 1738.

There is no reliable information about his activities before his arrival in Lviv.

His collaborator was the Polish architect from Zamość , Marcin Urbanik. Neither of you have enrolled in the Lviv master builders' guild, which became a cause of the conflicts.

At first they worked under the patronage of the Lviv City Council Carlo Garani, then the Starost of Kaniów , Nikolaus Basilius Potocki, commissioned them with the projects in Horodenka and Buczacz . You worked with the Lviv sculptor Johann Georg Brush . In 1745 Bernhard Meretyn was appointed court architect to the Polish King August III. appointed.

In 1742 Meretyn was busy with the renovation of the Lviv Saint Agnes Church and the monastery of the Shod Carmelites in Lemberg. Many of Meretyn's designs were not erected until after his death.
