Architecture and history

The Evangelical parish church of the area was the Sankt-Andreas-Kirche in the lower village of Thale. A permit from the Halberstadt government to hold an annual sermon on May 4, 1756, which was issued at the request of the mountain manager Herbig , is considered to be the beginning of church services in the Thaler Oberdorf . Regular church services then took place from 1843 in a private chapel of the hut owner Bennighausen . With the change of the hut ownership to the Soltmann family , however, the public use of this chapel, which today serves as a Catholic rectory, ended in 1864. The services then took place in different places, such as in hotels and also in the dining room of the hut.

Due to the strong growth of the ironworks and the significantly increasing population of Thales, the construction of a second Protestant church became necessary. A church building committee was founded on September 5, 1897. However, there were delays due to funding difficulties. In 1902, Empress Auguste Victoria took over the patronage of the building project. A decree came from her that determined Saint Peter as the patron saint and was supposed to represent the close relationship with the patron saint of Saint Andrew's Church. The foundation stone was laid in 1904.

The neo-Romanesque church was then built in the years 1904/1905 according to a design by the Quedlinburg building councilor Paul Ochs in the Rhenish late Romanesque style with a rich design of the facades. A rising central building in the shape of a cross was built from ashlar and dominated by a mighty octagonal tower. The church tower is crowned by a pointed helmet. The church roof is covered with slate. The northern arm of the building serves as an altar house and has a five-eighth choir polygon . The sacristy and a round stair tower with two side portals are located on the western arm . The windows of the church are designed as double or triple arched windows.

The topping-out ceremony was celebrated in 1905. The inauguration took place in 1906. On this occasion, the empress donated an altar Bible to the church with the dedication she had made herself: The Protestant St. Petri Church in Thale to commemorate July 19, 1906. Mt. 16, 18: You are Peter, you want to climb this rock I am building my church and the gates of hell are not supposed to overcome them. Altar and pulpit hangings were also donated by her.

A repair took place in 1999/2000.

The interior of the church is spanned by star vaults. The furnishings, including the galleries, come from the same period of construction. In the choir, Christ and Peter are depicted in several scenes on colored glass windows.
