The St. Andreas Church is a listed church in Thale in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the Halberstadt parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

location

It is on the south side of Kirchstrasse at the address Kirchstrasse 2 , to the south the Wendhusen monastery extends . To the west of the church is a historic schoolhouse.

Architecture and history

The church was built in the late 15th century in the area of the former Wendhusen nunnery and the Grafenhof that existed in the High Middle Ages . The church was given its current late Baroque appearance when it was renovated between 1786 and 1790, which probably also included the remains of the monastery. Other details give the period from 1787 to 1790 and describe the church as a new building including older parts.

To the west of the long rectangular nave there is a church tower built on a square floor plan from the mid-16th century. It is covered by a tent roof. On the west side of the tower there is a portal dated 1790.

Inside the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. There are galleries on the long sides, with lodge prospectuses in the chancel on both sides. The pulpit altar made in 1718 is remarkable . The pulpit basket is flanked on both sides by twisted columns entwined with vine leaves. There are various figurative jewelry depicting angels and evangelists. Acanthus carvings can be found on the sides of the altar and at the top. An alliance coat of arms of the von Wartenberg and von Bülow families framed by the carvings can be seen at the top . The pulpit altar is crowned by a figure depicting Christ with a victory flag.

The organ front is kept simple and comes from the time the church was built. The picture windows were created in 1884.

There are several epitaphs from the 16th to the 18th century. A portrait of a pastor from the first half of the 18th century is remarkable. A wall epitaph for Otto Werner von Steuben , who died in 1716 , was created in 1719 from black and white marble and its design is based on works created at the same time in Leipzig . It shows von Steuben in life size framed by two allegories and ornaments made of flags and weapons. The crowning consists of a trinity with angels.

On the outside of the north side of the church there is another figure tomb.

school

The two-story school building west of the church was built as a brick type building in the middle of the 19th century and also served as the cantor's house . It is simple and designed with a symmetrical facade. The room layout has been preserved in the original, and fittings such as doors and stairs are also from the construction period (as of 2018). The spatial proximity of church and school corresponds to the understanding of the function at that time and is today significant in terms of urban planning and local history.

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 45357 .
