Saint Philip the Apostle Cemetery
The Sankt-Philippus-Apostel-Kirchhof is a cemetery laid out in 1859 in the Berlin district of Wedding . It is administered by the Evangelical Cemetery Association Berlin-Stadtmitte.
The cemetery is located on Müllerstrasse next to the Seestrasse urn cemetery on a plot of land over 550 meters long and 60 meters narrow. A broad central axis runs through the entire cemetery. To the northwest runs the Ungarnstrasse , which separates the cemetery from the Schillerpark .
When the cemetery was laid out in 1859, the sparsely populated area was not yet part of Berlin's soft landscape . The decisive factor for the location was that today's Müllerstrasse and Chausseestrasse represented the direct connection from the Oranienburger Tor to Oranienburg .
Grave digger house and chapel
The listed house of the gravedigger from 1867 is one of the oldest buildings on Müllerstrasse. It is a simple one-story building with a gable roof . The front building has a second floor. It was designed by Schinkel supporter Edward Schmidt , who chose a facade design made of yellow brick with edging made of red bricks, which is also typical for Schinkel. Additions were made in 1889 (increase) and 1908. The cemetery chapel was built in 1877 and rebuilt in 1900.
Tombs
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of elaborate graves were built, which were later placed under monument protection.
- The tomb of the Robert Bohn family, made mainly of black granite, shows stylistic elements from neo-Romanesque and Art Nouveau. It was built in 1909.
- In 1913 the Behner grave of the former municipal building officer Ernst Behner was built . The tomb is neoclassical with Doric columns and a tub sarcophagus.
- Kurt Klemke's tomb, which was created in 1924 and consists of a grave stele framed by Doric columns, is also based on ancient models. The grave is also decorated with symbols of fish and anchors as a symbol of early Christianity.
- The Bathmann Mausoleum was built in 1927–1928 as a scaled-down copy of a Doric temple with a flight of stairs, pillared porch and triangular gable. The grave houses the chief building officer Carl Bathmann, Reich railway director Paul Bathmann and lawyer Hans Bathmann.
- The Wittler family of the Wittler bakery has its resting place in the cemetery in the form of a three-part curved grave wall with inscription panels and side walls.
- The Schöttler tomb, which was created in 1925 by the sculptor Renée Sintenis and is made of brick, is not antiquated but expressionistic . However, this grave is no longer preserved, but was dismantled in 1989. Some of the ceramic reliefs attached there can be seen in the cemetery chapel and some are stored.
