St. Magdalena cemetery church in Kemnath

The listed Roman Catholic cemetery church Sankt Maria Magdalena is located at Bayreuther Straße 20 in Kemnath in the Bavarian district of Tirschenreuth .

history

In 1558, after the introduction of Lutheran teaching, the cemetery next to the parish church was moved to the western edge of Kemnath. In the last years of Calvinism , the cemetery church was built here between 1604 and 1606. As the inscriptions on the south side of the church make clear, the builders were Gabriel Vischer and Sewolt Seitzen. Gabriel (F) Vischer is attested as mayor of Kemnath in 1609, Sebald Seitz was master mason of Kemnath. In the course of the Counter Reformation, the Catholics took over the Magdalenenkapelle in 1626.

Construction

The church is a Gothic hall church . The plastered solid structure has a gable roof and an irregular, three-sided choir closure . On the eastern side there is a small onion roof turret , the church is equipped with arched windows and tracery . The mortuary attached to the west is more recent. The tower rider was re-covered with copper in 1976, when the church facade was also renovated. During the renovation in 2013/14, the outer walls were drained and the roof structure and the wooden ceiling were renovated.

Interior

In the Calvinist period the church was poorly designed. The coffered ceiling painted with fittings and also the wooden gallery date from this time . Below the gallery is a depiction of the Mount of Olives with Jesus, the three sleeping apostles Peter , James and John and an angel with a chalice.

The baroque altar dates from around 1750 and is said to come from the secularized grave chapel. A wood-carved Pietà also comes from the abandoned grave chapel. A late Gothic large cross above the north entrance is older than the church and dates from the 16th century. To the left of the north portal is a sandstone holy water kettle. It shows three skulls with a snake winding through their eye sockets. Other wooden figures show depictions of Saint Joseph , Archangel Michael , Johannes Nepomuk and Primian , the little church is also decorated with pictures of Our Lady from 1754 and Saint Wendelin .

The pews were bought in 1802 from the dissolved Franciscan monastery . In the interior of the church there are numerous epitaphs of priests, nobles and electoral castlers buried here .

Bells

The bells were both in the First and in the Second World War removed. The two bells weighing 206 kg and 180 kg, which had been bought under Pastor Pellenwessel in 1928, were removed on April 29, 1942. The later pastor Georg Pilz managed to acquire two new bells. The smaller bell weighing 51 kg was cast by Johann Hahn from Landshut and bears the inscription Holy Year 1950 . The larger bell (from the same bell founder) weighs about 70 kg. It was donated by Andreas Niklas from the city of Kemnath in 1951 and shows a picture of Andreas. An electric bell has been installed since 1971.
