The Parish Church of the Assumption

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is the Roman Catholic parish church of the city of Kemnath in the northern Upper Palatinate in the diocese of Regensburg . The church, which is now a listed building, was built in the 15th century.

history

Since 1259 there has been a St. Mary's Church with a rectory on the site of today's church. Between 1364 and 1387 the parish seat, which was originally in Oberndorf, today a district of Kemnath, was moved to Kemnath. Towards the end of the 15th century, the population decided to build a new, larger church to replace the old one. On the outside of the left entrance portal is the year 1448, probably the year it was built. The inscription “1506” may indicate the year of completion. During the time of the Reformation , almost all furnishings were removed from the church, so that the population wrote a petition asking the authorities to leave at least the most essential items such as an altar, a baptismal font and a cross in the church. In the fire of Kemnath in 1572, the structure suffered great damage, the church tower was completely destroyed and the ship was badly damaged.

After the Thirty Years' War , Catholicism was revived in the region, the Franciscan monastery Kemnath was founded in Kemnath and the parish church was furnished with altars and statues between 1650 and 1700.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the church building was almost completely renovated. The renovation began in 1963 with the renovation of the altars by the church painter Michael Neunert. The church roof was re-covered, in the mid-1970s the outer facade of the nave and the tower was replastered and the interior was partially refurbished.

description

Exterior construction

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a hall church with vaults. The three-aisled parish church comes from the late Gothic period. The church tower with a square floor plan, which also served as the city tower, is attached to the southeast side . The 58 meter high tower with a gateway is the tallest structure in the city and forms the eastern end of the Kemnath town square.

Popular altar and high altar

Interior

The high altar came into the church in 1644 and was consecrated by the Regensburg auxiliary bishop Albert Ernst von Wartenberg in 1690 . Around a century after its installation, it was completely renewed and given a new color. The altarpiece, which was made by two local painters in 1859, shows the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . In 1908 the altar was given a new tabernacle structure by a sculptor from Regensburg . Under the altar canteen in a glass shrine there is a relic of the catacomb saint Primianus , which was handed over to the parish priest in Kemnath on August 27, 1692.

The two side altars in the chancel from 1650 are dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Laurentius. On the altarpiece of the Sebastian altar, the martyrdom of St. Sebastian is shown, a copy from the Jesuit Church St. Michael in Munich . The small picture shows the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John the Baptist . The martyrdom of St. Lawrence is shown on the altarpiece of the Laurentius Altarpiece, and the stoning of St. Stephen is shown on the small altarpiece .

The two altars in the nave are fitted into window niches. The cross altar, decorated with several putti , shows the suffering and death of Jesus with the crucified Jesus and the painful Mother of God underneath. On the two sides there are figures of the Apostle John and Mary Magdalene . The Sorrowful Altar of Our Lady opposite came in 1930 instead of a Johannes Nepomuk altar in the church. In the middle is a Pietà and on the sides there are figures of Saints Barbara and George .
