Sankt Wendeler Land
The Sankt Wendeler Land is located in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and is characterized by its varied natural and cultural landscapes. The Celts and Romans already left their mark on Sankt Wendeler Land: the Celtic ring wall in Otzenhausen and the Roman vicus in the Wareswald near Tholey . St. Wendelinus , who lived as an Irish-Scottish monk in St. Wendel in the 6th century, had a decisive influence on the religion.
His bones rest in the Wendalinus basilica , an impressive late Gothic hall church.
The abbey church in Tholey dates from the early Gothic period and is considered to be the oldest monastery in Germany with the Benedictine order . Pilgrims from far and wide since the 19th century to the Marian devotion site in Marpingen . The Johann-Adams-Mühle with mill museum and the Imsbach estate in Theley bear witness to rural life. A special kind of open-air gallery is the sculpture street leading from St. Wendel to the Bostalsee with over 40 sculptures. The Sankt Wendeler Land is also a popular holiday region with many recreational opportunities, above all the Bostalsee with its diverse range of water sports. A trip to the summer toboggan run on Peterberg, to the fun and adventure pool on the Schaumberg , to the precious stone paradise or to the natural game park in Freisen means pure fun for young and old. Those who prefer sport can play golf or do a few laps on the skate park in Wendelinuspark in St. Wendel. Popular excursion destinations are also the glider airfield in Marpingen , the Peterberg observatory , the Primstalsperre near Nonnweiler or the adventure trail on the Schaumberg. Many well-signposted cycling and hiking trails open up the region and lead to viewpoints such as Schaumberg and Peterberg.
