The Sannikow Strait ( Russian пролив Санникова ) is a 50 km wide and 100 km long sea route in the area of the New Siberian Islands . It separates the Lyakhov Islands in the south from the Anjou Islands in the north and it connects the Laptev with the East Siberian Sea .
The Strait of the Sea is named after Jakow Sannikow , a Russian explorer who first explored it on an expedition from 1810–1812 together with Matwei Gedenstrom .
Sannikowstrasse is a key point for the Northeast Passage , as the shallow water limits the maximum draft of a ship to 11 meters. Since 2010, however, the melting of the polar ice has made it possible to bypass the Anjou Islands and the Sannikow Strait at times; this route has a draft of about 18 meters.
