Jakow Sannikow ( Russian Яков Санников ; * 1780 in Ust-Jansk , † after 1812) was a Russian explorer, trader and cartographer in the early 19th century .

Life

Sannikow sailed the East Siberian and Laptev Seas , while discovering and mapping some islands of the New Siberian Islands , namely the Stolbowoi Island (1800) and the Faddejewski Island (1805).

From 1808 to 1810 he led an expedition with Mathias von Hedenström to map the New Siberian Islands. During this expedition the islands of New Siberia and Kotelny were discovered. Sannikow "discovered" another island north of the Kotelny island. This so-called " Sannikow-Land ", the existence of which was supposedly confirmed later by Eduard Toll's expeditions , should, however, as recent research show, never actually existed.

The Sannikow Street , a strait between the Little Lyakhov Island and Kotelny, is named after the discoverer.
