Santa Cruz is a small Jamaican town in the south of the Parish Saint Elizabeth in County Cornwall . In 2012, Santa Cruz had a population of 7,877 people. The name of the city is derived from the Santa Cruz Mountains of the same name, whose mountains determine the panorama of the region.

history

Santa Cruz was just a small village until the 1950s. After rich deposits of bauxite were found in the 1950s and 1960s, the city grew significantly. In Santa Cruz you still get the impression of a constantly changing cityscape.

geography

Santa Cruz is about 15 kilometers as the crow flies from the coast. The Braes River runs north of the city. The Santa Cruz Mountains of the same name extend southwest and separate the town from the sea. The mountains form a 487 meter high slope towards the sea at the so-called Lover's Leap .

The Albert Arms settlement is located directly on the town . The closest villages are Seven Corners in the south, just under 3 kilometers away, and Bybrook, around 4 kilometers to the north . There are many other small towns in the immediate vicinity.

Infrastructure

The Highway A2, which runs between the two Parish capitals Black River and Mandeville, runs through Santa Cruz .

The city has the longest and best-developed road network of Saint Elizabeth and is one of the most important transport hubs on Jamaica's south coast.

economy

Santa Cruz particularly benefits from the mining of bauxite . But other minerals and metals are also mined.

Although Black River is the capital of Saint Elizabeth, Santa Cruz is the Parish's economic hub and largest city. The place is known for the fact that you can buy all kinds of goods there. Santa Cruz is the fastest growing city in Saint Elizabeth and has great appeal for young people in the area.

Santa Cruz is home to the island's most famous cigar manufacturers, whose plantations are located near the city.

schools

There are several schools, secondary schools, and vocational schools in Santa Cruz. Special mention should be made of the internationally known St. Elizabeth Technical High School, which was founded in 1958 and opened in 1961.
