Santa Eufemia de Ambía is a pre-Romanesque church dating back to the 10th century. It belongs to the Parroquia Ambía of the municipality of Baños de Molgas and is located in the Spanish autonomous community of Galicia , about 25 km southeast of Ourense . The south wall and the east facade have been preserved from the original building. In 1931 the church was declared a monument ( Monumento Histórico Artístico ).

Dating

Two stone blocks with dedicatory inscriptions on which the names Salvator and Eufemia have been deciphered were found near the church . They are interpreted as evidence that the church was consecrated to the two patron saints and are an indication of the time the church was built. In the 9th and 10th centuries it was customary to dedicate churches to several saints and to assign their own altars to them.

architecture

Rectangular apses with twin windows, beginnings of the horseshoe arches between the main apse and the side apses

The church is built from granite blocks of different sizes, carefully joined together . The interior now only consists of a single hall. The partition walls and the beginnings of the horseshoe arches can still be seen between the rectangular apses . The open bell gable (espadaña) is from a later period.

window

The window openings of the apses are designed as twin windows and have the shape of keyholes. The tightly closed horseshoe arches indicate Mozarabic influence. In the gusset of the central twin window a heart is engraved and on the fighters to the center support two horseshoe arches are carved into the stone.
