Achim Arbeiter (born September 3, 1958 in Dierdorf ) is a German Christian archaeologist . His research area is the late antique, early Christian and early medieval art of the Iberian Peninsula .

Life

Achim Arbeiter grew up near Celle and graduated from the Ernestinum Celle in 1977 . From 1977 to 1979 he studied art history , medieval and modern history as well as ethnology at the University of Mainz and from 1979 to 1983 at the University of Hamburg . In 1983 he started working for Alt-St. Peter is doing his doctorate in Rome . In the following years he was at the Madrid Department of the German Archaeological Institutebusy, but the work there was interrupted several times by other activities. Most recently Arbeiter was a consultant for early Christian archeology there. In 1990 he spent six months at the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute , where he researched the mosaics of S. Costanza . In 1990/91 he was the holder of the DAI travel grant . In 1996 he moved to Saarbrücken, where he was teaching at Saarland University . Workers habilitated in 1997 with the work of the mosaics of S. Costanza in Rome at Beat Brenk at the University of Basel . This work was published together with the historical study of the building by Jürgen J. Rasch in 2007. Since 1998 he has been Professor of Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History at the University of Göttingen .

The married father of two children was chairman of the Christian Archeology Working Group for the study of late antique, early medieval and Byzantine culture from 2004 to 2008 . Arbeiter is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
