Santa Iria is a village in the Portuguese region of Alentejo , near the county seat of Serpa . The place belongs to the municipality ( Freguesia ) of Salvador e Santa Maria .

The traditional farm workers' village with a few hundred inhabitants is characterized by emigration, but still has a social life. Although the primary school is closed, there is still an active cultural and community center with the Centro Cultural de Santa Iria . The local mountain bike association, the Santa Iria Bike Team, has its headquarters there and organizes regular competitions and rides in Santa Iria. Every year around October 20th, the Festa de Santa Iria, a popular festival in the region, takes place.

history

The place had been an independent municipality since at least the 16th century.

In the course of the administrative reform of 1936, the municipality of Santa Iria was dissolved and Salvador was incorporated .

The German-Portuguese filmmaker Lourdes Picareta also portrayed her home village Santa Iria in her film Meine Heimat Alentejo in 2015 for SWR television .

economy

The majority of the residents work in the surrounding areas or live on old-age pensions, agriculture is often only pursued as a sideline.

An important employer in Santa Iria is the Swiss-run Risca Grande Lda. , which produces high-quality olive oil for the global specialist trade. Production began in 2000 on the estate of the same name, which was for sale after the largely failed land reform in the years after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, and operates biodynamic agriculture according to Demeter standards.
