Santa Maria degli Angeli

Santa Maria degli Angeli is a Roman Catholic church built in the 16th century in the Italian port city of Barletta in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani in Apulia . In addition to the church dedicated to the patronage of “Our Lady of the Angels”, the cultural monument also includes the convent , which is popularly known as “dei Cappuccini”.

history

The church was built by Capuchins between 1530 and 1550 . At a time when the plague ravaged the city and the population fell from 20,000 in 1656 to 8,000 in March 1657, this church gained special importance. The Capuchins resident here looked after the sick and set up a hospital in their monastery, where they celebrated the liturgy as well as nursing the sick .

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Count Tiberio Carafa and Gaetano Gambacorta , Prince of Macchia Valfortore , found refuge here after they had fled Naples .

The monastery was closed on February 17, 1861, and in 1866 ownership of the monastery passed to the municipality of Barletta, who took over the library there, which forms the basis of today's municipal library.
