Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Morbio Inferiore)
The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (St. Maria Miracle) is a Roman Catholic church in Morbio Inferiore in the Swiss canton of Ticino . The sanctuary is located in the Diocese of Lugano and was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1990 .
Founding legend and history
Two sick young women from Milan, possessed by the devil, set out on the arduous journey from Milan to Morbio in the summer of 1594 to be blessed by the local vice pastor Gaspare dei Barberini, who was not present. The remains of a castle attested to in 1198 were at the site of today's church. On the wall of the ruin they put up a portrait of Mary in order to pray in front of it with their mothers and other women from the village. The miracle is said to have taken place during the prayer, and the Holy Virgin is said to have revealed herself to them and healed. Just eight days later, the miracle was recognized by the Bishop of Como and a first pilgrimage developed. Exactly one year later (July 29, 1595) the foundation stone for today's church was laid. It was consecrated in 1613 by Monsignor Filippo Archinti, Bishop of Como, and has been the parish church of the community since 1776. Above the apse , a glass wall depicts the miracle and healing of Caterina and Angela. Even today, the church is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the canton of Ticino. The patronage festival is on July 29th.
The church was restored for the first time in 1924, and again in 1999–2001.
