The church of Santa Maria dell'Orto is in Trastevere , the XIII. Rione (district) of Rome , at 10 Via Anicia.

history

The current church building was built during the Renaissance period. Its predecessor was a chapel, the construction of which goes back to the veneration of an image of Mary in this place. When, around 1488, a farmer was miraculously cured of his illness after praying in front of an image of Mary at the entrance of a garden, this image was subsequently venerated by the Roman people and a chapel was built for it.

Building history

The present church was built between 1489 and 1567. Twelve guilds , corporations of Roman craftsmen, called “università”, took care of their maintenance and design . In 1492 Pope Alexander VI approved . the establishment of a brotherhood , which Pope Sixtus V raised to arch brotherhood in 1588 with the privilege of securing the release of a person sentenced to death annually.

The church facade in the late Renaissance style was based on a design by Vignola (Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola) (or perhaps Martino Longhi the Elder ). Guidetto Guidetti designed the interior. He changed the original plan of the church (on the plan of a Greek cross with four apses) to a three-aisled nave building on the plan of a Latin cross .

Giacinto Calandrucci painted the central vault fresco "Assumption of Mary into Heaven" 1700–1705.

Popular piety

High altar by Giacomo della Porta

The “Macchina delle Quarant'Ore per il Giovedì santo” is set up on the high altar on the evening after the Maundy Thursday liturgy . The structure made of carved, gilded wood (18th century, based on a design from the 17th century) carries around 200 burning candles on the occasion of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on this altar ("altare della reposizione"), which was used by numerous believers after the Maundy Thursday liturgy is attended. The “Macchina delle Quarant'Ore” in Santa Maria dell'Orto is probably the only structure in Italy that is still in use today.
