Santa Maria Immacolata a Via Veneto
Santa Maria Immacolata a Via Veneto or Nostra Signora della Concezione dei Cappuccini is the name of a church building in Rome .
The church was built at the instigation of Cardinal Antonio Barberini , brother of Pope Urban VIII , according to plans by Antonio Casoni between 1626 and 1631 and is located on Via Veneto near Piazza Barberini . It still belongs to a Capuchin monastery today . There is an ossuary in the crypt .
The ossuary made the church famous because hundreds of skeletons were not only stored but processed there until 1870. In six rooms, connected by a common corridor, skulls, pelvic bones, vertebrae and shoulder blades were arranged into wall decorations, flowers and biblical representations. You can also see a chandelier made entirely of bone, which hangs from the ceiling of the room.
You can visit the crypt in the attached Capuchin Museum for a fee.
A sign at the entrance to the crypt reads : “Quello che voi siete noi eravamo; quello che noi siamo voi sarete. " (What you are we have been; what we are you will be.)
