Santi Santamaria (born July 16, 1957 in Sant Celoni , Catalonia , † February 16, 2011 in Singapore ) was a Spanish chef and restaurateur .

Life

Santi Santamaria began an apprenticeship at the age of 15 and initially worked in a factory, in the automotive industry and in a refinery , he also studied industrial design . As an autodidact , he started cooking at the age of 24. In 1981 he opened his first restaurant in his parents' house in Sant Celoni.

In 1994 he was the first Catalan whose restaurant was awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide and, after Juan Mari Arzak, the second Spanish chef ever. Since 1994 his restaurant El Racó de Can Fabes in Sant Celoni has received three Michelin stars a year. His restaurant Santceloni in Madrid received two Michelin stars and the Evo in Barcelona received one Michelin star. The Can Fabes has been named the best restaurant in Spain in the year 2000th His cookbook "La Cocina de Santi Santamaria" was awarded as the best cookbook of 1999.

Santamaria was an advocate of a culinary technique and opponent of molecular cuisine , which, for example, his friend Ferran Adrià represents.

He died of complications from a heart attack while visiting a Santi restaurant run by his daughter Regina in the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore.
