Santiago is a city with 49,493 inhabitants (as of 2018) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 450 km west of Porto Alegre . Neighboring are the towns of Bossoroca , Capão do Cipó , Tupanciretã , Jari , Jaguari , Nova Esperança do Sul , São Francisco de Assis , Unistalda and Itacurubi . Originally, Santiago was part of the municipalities of Itaqui and São Borja .
