The Santo Antônio Dam (Usina Hidrelétrica Santo Antônio) is a dam with a hydropower plant on the Rio Madeira about 6 km southwest of Porto Velho in the Brazilian state of Rondônia .

The dam is part of a complex of four planned hydropower plants on the Madeira River. This consists of two dams in Brazil (the Santo Antonio dam with 3580 MW near Porto Velho and the Jirau dam with 3750 MW about 100 km upstream), a third on the border between Brazil and Bolivia , and a fourth in Bolivia. The two in Brazil, Santo Antonio and Jirau, are currently under construction, while the smaller ones upstream are still in the planning phase. Due to the power outages in Brazil from 2001 to 2002, its construction was accelerated in 2009; the last power plants went into operation in 2016. Santo Antônio is estimated to cost US $ 7 billion to build, including locks, transmission lines and environmental restoration efforts.

planning

The Santo Antônio Dam was designed as a run-of-river power plant . The barrier structure of the dam will be a 13.9 m high and 3100 m long gravity dam that will create a reservoir with a surface area of 271 km², 164 km² of which is the original river bed. The hydropower plant has four sets of Kaplan bulb turbines with a total of 50 pieces, each with a nominal output of 71.6 MW, for a total of 3,580 MW. Kaplan bulb turbines are very similar to Kaplan turbines , except that they are installed horizontally so that power diversion and efficiency are better. The hydropower plant will have a maximum discharge of 24,684 m³ / s. There are two flood reliefs, a main relief and an auxiliary relief at the southern abutment. Both together will have a discharge capacity of 84,000 m³ / s to regulate the water level in the reservoir. The dam will also have two fish ladders and a lock .
