Santo Stefano ( German : Saint Stefan) is a Roman Catholic Church ( Italian : Chiesa di Santo Stefano) in Tirano in the Roncaiola district , near the Swiss border in the Italian province of Sondrio , Lombardy region . The church belongs to the ecclesiastical region of Lombardy , the diocese of Como , and is dedicated to Saint Stephen (* approx. 1 AD; † approx. 36/40 AD).

Location and history

The church is located in the Roncaiola fraction above Tirano and was built in 1690. In 1932 it was raised to an independent village church by Bishop Carlo Ciceri .

building

The largely white church was built in the late Baroque period and shows the classical lines used at that time. These are kept simple and based on historical models (see e.g. the entrance area, portal). The tower of the church is not built independently on the church, but builds on the existing building between the side chapel of the nave and the choir . For the main orientation of the building, the tower is also rotated by about 45 degrees. Access is half-open via a rung ladder.

graveyard

A few hundred meters from Rancaiola is the old, almost dilapidated, cemetery of the village.
