The Santon , formerly Padělek , Tvaroženský kopeček or Napoleonův kopec is a hill in the Czech Republic . It is located one kilometer southwest of Tvarožná in the Okres Brno-venkov .

geography

The elongated hill rises south above the valley of the Pozořický creek before its confluence with the Roketnice. At the foot of the Santon are Tvarožná in the north-east, Rohlenka in the south, Maxlůvka in the south-west and Velatice in the north-west.

history

The chapel of the Virgin Mary on Padělek was built around 1700. In 1786 it was repealed as part of the Josephine reforms, but it was renewed a little later. The Padělek gained historical importance at the end of 1805 in the Battle of Austerlitz as Napoleon Bonaparte's headquarters and artillery position for the left wing of the French. During the battle, General Claparède's artillery brigade was fired on the Santon . The French named the hill Santon and the locals called it Napoleonův kopec after the battle . The chapel, ruined when the fortifications were built, was restored in 1832.

The Santon has been protected as a natural monument since 1979 . The hill was traditionally used as pasture, the stony areas were unsuitable for agriculture. In preparation for the battle, the Santon was also completely cleared. As a result, valuable heat-loving plant communities could develop. Since the end of the 19th century, the hill has been reforested with locust trees , ash trees and other non-native trees, the warmth-loving flora had almost completely disappeared in the 1970s. After renovation work that has been carried out on the Santon since 1995, more than 300 species of higher plants are growing again on the open areas .
