The Sappho Women's Housing Foundation (spelling: SAPPhO) was founded with the aim of creating affordable housing and an independent lesbian living and living culture, "in which you can grow old well". The foundation , based in Wuppertal , was recognized as a non-profit foundation under civil law by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in August 1997, making it the first non-profit foundation by and for lesbians in Europe. The foundation was named after the Greek poet Sappho .

history

For four years - from 1993 to 1997 - a group of six women worked to establish the SAPPhO Frauenwohnstift foundation. Some came from the Safia - Lesbians shape their age association , which brought in the "Hofgut Wüstenbirkach" lesbian housing project in Lower Franconia . After the establishment, two apartments from the SAFIA-Alten-Wohngemeinschaft “Villa Charlotta” were added. Over the years, numerous donations have been made, so that the foundation's assets have grown steadily and the foundation now has some properties in Hanover , Lüneburg and Charlottenberg ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), including a multi-storey town house and a seminar and conference center. In 2009 the foundation was one of the founding members of the national umbrella organization "Lesbians & Age" based in Hamburg.

Foundation purpose

The aim and purpose of the foundation is to create the prerequisites for lesbians in old age to be able to develop new ways of living and living and ways of living together. This includes creating affordable housing for lesbians. In addition, the foundation supports the establishment of residential and house communities for self-help in old age and the establishment of meeting places for old and young lesbians to establish and maintain social and cultural lesbian networks. The purpose of this work is to break the possible isolation of lesbians in old age.

In an interview at the symposium Be different and grow older. Lesbians and gays in 2002 in Berlin said one of the founders of the foundation, the publisher Anke Schäfer (1938–2013): “We were very proud when we achieved this. The sole purpose of the foundation is to create living space for older lesbians. "The form of the foundation was chosen because foundations are" not as vulnerable "as associations. "All foundations somehow survived the Third Reich."

Barbara Gissrau Fund

The psychoanalyst Barbara Gissrau (born 1943), who died in 2008, bequeathed not only real estate to the foundation, but also securities and capital assets. This brought the fund into being, which is financed today from donations. The fund supports older lesbians who have little money with up to 500 euros a year.

organization

As a rule, women on the board of directors commit themselves to volunteer work for at least six years and meet with each other and with the managing director at least four times a year. They are supported by advisory women who are also volunteers, including psychologists and doctors. As long as they live, the first generation of fellow women decides who is allowed to use the foundation's objects; the foundation only decides after their death.

reception

The development of new forms of living for women was a central concern of the first women's movement in Germany. For the second women's movement since the 1970s, the creation of autonomous women's spaces was a key focus of their activities. Spatial planner Ruth Becker counts Sappho's lesbian housing project among the autonomous women's housing projects, which she uses to describe projects “that were initiated and implemented by women that explicitly relate to the autonomous women's movement and / or where the“ concept of autonomy ”, i.e. the goal Creating living space "in the hands of women" or for life in women ' s terms is in the foreground and its objectives relate to women of different ages and in different life situations. " SAPPhO is an" impressive example "of this, as for women with only small fortunes have to inherit, the establishment of a foundation can be interesting when they join forces. A foundation is particularly suitable for women's housing projects, as SAPPhO successfully shows.

For the 10th anniversary of the foundation in 2007, the then Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Family and Women of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, praised the founders for “their perseverance and foresight. They laid the foundation for the foundation's idea of keeping assets in the hands of lesbians or women and thus financing housing projects for lesbians. "
