Saqqez ( Persian سقز; Kurdish سەقز, Seqiz ) is a city in the Iranian province of Kordestān . Most of the over 141,000 inhabitants are Kurds who speak Sorani - Kurdish.

The city is located at an altitude of 1,493 meters at the northern end of the Zāgros Mountains on the Tschehel-Tscheschmeh on the Zarriné-Rūd river. Winters are cold and snowy, summers hot and dry. Saqqez is one of the coldest cities in Iran in winter.

The first inhabitants of the city were the Medes and also the Scythians (Saka), after whom the city is named; thus the founding of the city is dated to around 1000 BC. Among the historically significant sights include the archaeological excavation site of Ziwiye in the east of the city, which dates back to the Scythian and early Median periods; as well as the Karaftu cave with prehistoric traces.
