from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sara the Hermit , also Sarra or Sarrha (* 4th century in Egypt , † 4th or 5th century in Egypt), was a Christian hermit . She is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox churches . Her feast day is July 13th .

About the life of St. Sara is little known. She came from a respected Christian Egyptian family and moved to the Libyan desert near Skete at a young age to lead an ascetic life there. Sara lived in seclusion on the banks of the Nile for 60 years and was known for her faith and wisdom. Often she was visited by other hermits who appreciated her wise advice on matters of faith. The advice she gave her visitors is recorded in the very popular books of the desert fathers , the so-called Apophthegmata Patrum ("sayings of the fathers"). Her best-known saying is: "By nature I am a woman, but not by my spiritual strength."
