Sara van Baalbergen (* 1607 in Haarlem ; † after 1638) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age , the heyday of Dutch art production in the 17th century . She was the first woman to join the Guild of St. Luke , a guild-like brotherhood of Haarlem painters, in 1631 .

life and work

Little is known about the life of Sara van Baalbergen, who was born in Haarlem at the beginning of the 17th century and who made oil paintings . She was the daughter of the Flemish merchant Andries von Baelberge and his wife Beatrix van Radik and a contemporary of the painter Judith Leyster, who also came from Haarlem, but was much better known .

According to the database of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague , Sara van Baalbergen was the first female member of the St. Luke Painters' Guild in Haarlem in 1631, which until then had only included men. Judith Leyster was only accepted as a member there two years later. Sara van Baalbergen is also listed as a guild member for the years 1634 to 1638. In 1634 she and Judith Leyster were the only women besides 58 male guild members. In total, only three Dutch artists are known to have joined a guild.

In 1634 she married the landscape painter Barent van Eysen , a later pupil of Vincent van der Vinne (1628–1702). After 1638 their track is lost. Her works have not survived.
