Sarah Kay (born June 19, 1988 in New York City ) is an American poet known for her “ Spoken Word ” performances .

Sarah Kay grew up in New York City as the daughter of a Japanese- American mother and an American-Jewish father. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in The Art of Teaching from Brown University and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Grinnell Private College , Iowa .

At the age of 14, she began taking part in poetry slam events. She joined the "Bowery Poetry Club" in the East Village (Manhattan) , which gave her access to a variety of stages. In 2006 she was the youngest participant in the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas . A year later, she made her first TV appearance on Mos Def's program Def Poetry Jam . She presented her poem Hands there . As a result, she appeared on several stages and events, including at Lincoln Center , the Tribeca Film Festival and a UN youth project . In 2011 she performed her poem B. If I Should Have a Daugther… at the TED conference in Edinburgh and received a standing ovation . Since then she has appeared in “Spoken Word” performances in 30 countries on six continents. Your texts will be printed and published as audio books.

As part of her project Voice , she teaches poetry workshops in a duo with the poet Phil Kaye, whom she has known since a talent show in 2006, and goes on international tours throughout the year with “Spoken Word” performances. About their friendship they share a text written entitled An Origin Story ( An origin story ), and in 2019 Brooklyn listed. While Phil Kaye gave the stand-up comedian , Sarah Kay's lecture was "breathless and awesome," wrote The New Yorker . The performance was viewed more than two million times on YouTube.
