Sarath Leelananda Bandara Amunugama ( Sinhalese සරත් ලීලානන්ද බණඩාර අමුනුගම ; Tamil சரத் ​​அமுனுகம ; born July 10, 1939 in Kandy , Central Province ) is a Sri Lankan politician of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Life

After attending Trinity College in Kandy, founded by Anglican missionaries in 1872, Amunagama studied at the University of Ceylon and then entered the public service. During his work in the public service he was, among other things, Government Agent Head of Administration in the Kandy District and Permanent Secretary to the highest administrative officer in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, before he was most recently chairman of the board of the state press group Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and an employee of UNESCO was in Paris .

In the election on August 16, 1994 , Amunagama became a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament for the United National Party (UNP) for the first time and has since represented the constituency of Kandy , where he later switched to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SFLP). In August 2000 he took over the post of Minister for Irrigation and Water Resources Management in the first government of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and then, after a government reshuffle from 2001 until the end of Wickremanayake's term in office in December 2001, the post of Minister for Education and Higher Education.

In the government of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa , he served as Finance Minister from April 14, 2004 to November 22, 2005. In the second government of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake that followed, he initially held the post of Minister of Public Administration and Minister of the Interior between November 23, 2005 and January 28, 2007. After a government reshuffle, he took over the post of Minister for Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion from January 26, 2007 to April 21, 2010 and, after a further government reshuffle, between December 31, 2008 and April 21, 2010, again as Minister of Public Administration and Interior Minister after the previous Interior Minister Karu Jayasuriya resigned on December 9, 2008. In the subsequent government of Prime Minister DM Jayaratne , he served as Deputy Minister for Finance and Planning between April 2010 and January 2015.

Amunagama, who is now a member of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), first took over the post of Minister for Higher Education and Research in the third government formed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on January 9, 2015, and then, after a government reshuffle, the post on October 23, 2015 as Minister for Special Projects.
