Sardashht ( Persian سردشت; Kurdish : Serdeşt , also Zerdeşt ) is a city in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan . Sardasht is mainly inhabited by Kurds.
The name of the city is said to come from Persian زَردُشت Derive Zardošt ( Zarathustra ) . It has more than 41,000 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 1,300 meters southwest of Lake Urmia .
One of the special features of the region is the Geravan mineral spring, which is used for the treatment of skin diseases.
Poison gas attack
Sardasht was the first city to be attacked with chemical weapons by Iraq during the first Gulf War (1980–1988) . On June 28, 1987, four 250 kg mustard gas bombs were dropped over the city by the Iraqi Air Force . Over 100 Iranians and Kurds died and hundreds were injured. This attack occurred before the poison gas attack on Halabja and did not reach the world. The population of Sardasht consists predominantly of Kurds .
