Prolagus sardus
( Wagner , 1832)

The Sardinian Pfeifhase ( Prolagus sardus ) is an extinct species of the Prolagidae related to the Pfeifhasen , which was native to the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica . It probably became extinct around 1800, although evidence of its existence until the 18th century is thin. According to other sources, it died out about 2000 years ago and the later occurrence on Tavolara is considered to be unconfirmed.

It was described as a large hare without a tail and it is very likely that it was eaten by the local population as early as the Stone Age , as can be found in the Grotta Corbeddu .

Systematics

The Sardinian pika belonged to the genus Prolagus . All Prolagus species are extinct. Fossils of the genus have been found in southern, western and central Europe and dated to the Miocene , Pliocene and Pleistocene . The also extinct Corsican pigeon (formerly Prolagus corsicanus ) was the second species of this genus, but is now considered a subspecies of the Sardinian pigeon. The closest living relatives of this species are the pika of the genus Ochotona .
