Prolagus is an extinct species of mammal with the Pfeifhasen related (Ochotonidae) Prolagidae within the lagomorphs (Lagomorpha).

Age and locations

The species of the genus Prolagus first appeared in Europe at the beginning of the early Miocene .

Systematics

Prolagus is the only genus of the Prolagidae family within the rabbit family . Individual authors consider them to be a subfamily of the Ochotonidae.

The genus Prolagus consists of numerous fossil species. Only the Sardinian pika ( Prolagus sardus ) lived in Sardinia and Corsica until a few centuries ago . The last sighting of this species was in 1774 (Smith 2008). It is believed to have become extinct due to habitat destruction and the introduction of alien species ( neozoa ) to the islands.
