The Sarmatian bellflower ( Campanula sarmatica ) is a species of bellflower ( Campanula ) in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae).

features

The Sarmatian bellflower is a perennial , richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 50 cm. The plant branches out at the base, the stems are slightly woody. The basal leaves are elongated and long stalked, the leaf margin is clearly serrated. The leaves, which start at the top of the shoot , are sessile (i.e. not stalked) and lanceolate. All leaves are hairy. The flowers are about 3 cm in size and sit in loose racemose inflorescences . The lower flowers are clearly stalked, the upper almost sessile. The flowers also often slope to one side and down. The petals are pale purple, sometimes very pale and almost white, conspicuously densely hairy on the edge. The sepals are triangular-lanceolate and pointed, the calyx has small, tooth-like appendages.

The flowering period is from June to August.

Occurrence

The Sarmatian bellflower occurs exclusively in the Caucasus . They are found in the northern Caucasus and Transcaucasia , there in Georgia and Azerbaijan .

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Campanula sarmatica subsp. calcarea (Albov) Ogan. (Syn .: Campanula calcarea (Albov) Kharadze ): It occurs in Transcaucasia.
  • Campanula sarmatica subsp. ramosissima (Sommier & Levier) Ogan. (Syn .: Campanula sommieri Kharadze ): It occurs in the northwestern Caucasus region.
  • Campanula sarmatica Ker Gawl. subsp. sarmatica (Syn .: Campanula siegizmundii Fed. ): It occurs in the Caucasus.
  • Campanula sarmatica subsp. woronowii (Kharadze) Ogan. (Syn .: Campanula woronovii Kharadze ): It occurs in the northwestern Caucasus region.
