Satanic Surfers is a Swedish skate punk band.
history
The band was founded in 1989 by Rodrigo Alfaro and Erik Kronwall. After a few line-up changes, the debut EP Skate to Hell was recorded in 1993. The band financed the first two productions of the CD itself. These sold over 1000 times in the next few months. In 1994 the EP was re-released by Bad Taste Records . At the same time Burning Heart Records showed an interest in the band. The second EP Keep Out , with singer Ulf Erikson, was released on this label.
Before the first full album was released, there was a fundamental change in the line-up of the band. The singer left and Rodrigo Alfaro, the drummer, took over the vocals. The following three albums were released on Burning Heart Records, with Hero of Our Time in particular attracting attention with over 60,000 CDs sold. The Satanic Surfers traveled through Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA, among others with the bands Lagwagon , Good Riddance and Millencolin .
In 2000 the band split from Burning Heart Records to switch to Bad Taste Records. In the following two years the albums Fragments and Fractions (2000) and Unconsciously Confined (2002) were released. Between these two albums, Rodrigo Alfaro decided to concentrate fully on the vocals and left the drums part to Martin Stevensson, an employee of Bad Taste Records. This parted from the band soon afterwards. It was not until March 2004 that the position on drums was filled with Robert Samsonovitz, who had previously played with the band Adhesive . The third album on Bad Taste Records, Taste the Poison , was released in 2005 after a hiatus of two years.
In March 2007 the band announced their breakup. On December 17, 2014, however , the Spanish Resurrection Festival announced a resurgence of the band. Newcomer Stefan Larsson replaced Robert Samsonovitz on drums. In 2015 Satanic Surfers played several festivals in Europe (including Groezrock, Ruhrpott Rodeo, Resurrection Fest, Punk Rock Holiday, Highfield) as well as at the Canadian Amnesia Rockfest. Since the reunification, Satanic Surfers have been playing regular international shows again (e.g. Central and South America tours in 2015 and 2017 [obsolete] and club shows in Europe).
In February 2018, the Satanic Surfers announced a new album entitled Back from Hell , which was released in April 2018. The band released their first new song, The Usurper, in advance .
style
The band combines distinctive melodies and fast punk rock rhythms with sometimes very personal but also political lyrics. Because of the lyrics, which at that time were still very often about skating, the Satanic Surfers were often described as a skate-punk band. They belonged to the bands of the Swedish "Punkrock Explosion" in the mid-1990s. Early influences were bands like SNFU , RKL and the Misfits .
