Heinz Ensign

Heinz Fähnrich (born January 10, 1941 in Hammer , Sudetengau ) is a German Kaukasiologist .

Life

Ensign was born on January 10, 1941 in Hammer near Brüx in what was then the Sudetengau. In 1959 he completed school with the Abitur.

Already in his youth he was interested in classical studies and wished to travel to Egypt one day. After he began studying archeology in Jena in 1960, the lectures given by Gertrud Pätsch aroused his interest. Inspired by her, he first studied Indonesian and then the Georgian language . In 1965 he finished his studies.

From 1965 ensign was a research assistant at the University of Jena and received his doctorate there in 1969 . A partnership contract between the Jena University and the State University of Tbilisi enabled him to travel to Georgia . He defended his 1970 habilitation dissertation on Georgian and was in 1971 Tbilisi habilitation . From 1986 he held the only professorship for Kaukasiology in Germany at the University of Jena . His areas of research are historical-comparative linguistics and Kaukasiology.

His work has been recognized with the Akaki Shanidze Prize (1992), the Ivan Jawachishvili Medal, the Marie Brosset Prize of the Center for Cartelological Studies and the Georgian Order of Honor (2002). Ensign has been a member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences since 1996 .

In 2006 he retired .

Publications

Ensign has published numerous books on the history, language and literature of Georgia, including "Brief Grammar of the Georgian Language" (1986, 1987, 1993), "Georgian Literature" (1993), "History of Georgia from the Beginnings to Mongol Rule" (1993) , "Grammar of the Old Georgian Language" (1994) and together with Zurab Sardzhweladze "Old Georgian-German Dictionary" (1999).

He has also distinguished himself as a translator of Georgian literature, including a. from "The Moon of Mtatsminda" ( Galaktion Tabidse ), "The Wisdom of Lies" ( Sulchan-Saba Orbeliani ) "Lascharela" and "The Long Night" ( Grigol Abaschidze ), fairy tales, sagas and poetry.

The scientific journal "Georgica: Journal for Culture, Language and History of Georgia and the Caucasus", of which he is editor-in-chief, has been published annually since 1978 , first in Jena, then in Konstanz and currently in Aachen .
