Grigol Abashidze

Grigol Abashidze Grigolowitsch ( Georgian გრიგოლ გრიგოლის ძე აბაშიძე ; Russian Григол Григолович Абашидзе ; born July 19 . Jul / 1. August  1914 greg. In Tschiatura , Russian Empire ;. Died 29. July 1994 in Tbilisi , Georgia ) was a Georgian Soviet poet and novelist .

life and work

Abashidze graduated from Tbilisi University in 1936 . He had published his first works two years earlier. The central hero in his poems is the Soviet citizen as a hard worker and builder of communism ("Forever in Armor", 1938; "The Founder", 1939). He reached his maturity during the Great Patriotic War with works such as "Die Feinde" (1941), "Das Panzerduell" (1941), "Die Banners" (1943) and "The invincible Kauskasus" (1943).

In 1942 he wrote the narrative poem "George the Sixth" (1942), which portrays the Georgians' struggle for national independence. In 1944 he joined the CPSU . Abashidze expressed his Soviet patriotism in the series of poems "On the Southern Frontier" (1949) and "Lenin in Samgori" (1950) . In 1951 he received the Stalin Prize for both cycles . He also wrote the text for the national anthem of the Georgian SSR together with Alexander Abascheli .

He also wrote historical novels about life in Georgia in the 13th century ("Lascharela", 1957; "The Long Night"). In 1959 his dramatic narrative poem “The legend of the first inhabitants of Tbilisi” was published, two years later “Journey in Three Times”.

From 1967 he was chairman of the Georgian Writers ' Union , and from 1970 he was a member of the Secretariat of the Writers' Union of the USSR . In 1979 he was elected as a member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences .

Abashidze also wrote for children. His grave is in the Didube-Pantheon cemetery of honor .
