Satwant Singh

Satwant Singh (* 1962 ; † January 6, 1989 ) was a bodyguard of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi . On October 31, 1984, he murdered Indira Gandhi along with another of her bodyguards, Beant Singh , in retaliation for Operation Blue Star .

Assassination attempt on Indira Gandhi

Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were both Sikh religious and murdered Gandhi because of their responsibility for Operation Blue Star. During this operation, Gandhi had stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar , one of the most important shrines of the Sikhs, after it was occupied by separatists. According to the Indian government, several hundred people were killed in this storm, and according to Sikhist sources, there were even around 5000 dead.

Satwant Singh and Beant Singh fired 33 bullets at Indira Gandhi, 30 of which hit the Prime Minister.

Both assassins were overwhelmed and arrested. Beant Singh was later shot dead by other bodyguards. Satwant Singh was together with another conspirator Kehar Singh , sentenced to death . The death sentences were carried out on January 6, 1989. Both were hanged in Tihar Prison in Delhi . After the execution , riots broke out in Punjab.

Actions of the Sikh clergy

In 2003 a ceremony was held in the Akal Takhat of Amritsar, honoring Satwant Singh and Beant Singh.

In 2004, a service was held on the day of her execution in Akal Takhat, Amritsar. Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were honored by various party representatives.

In 2007 services for Satwant Singh were held in various locations in Punjab .

On January 6, 2008, the supreme religious authority of the Sikhs in Amritsar's Akal Takhat declared Satwant Singh and the other assassins Indira Gandhi to be martyrs of the Sikhs. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee , an advocacy group for the Sikhs, also calls Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh martyrs. The Sikhist party Shiromani Akali Dal regards the assassins as martyrs .
