Sauberg (Freital)

The Sauberg is a little more than 200  m high elevation in the area of ​​the Freital district of Potschappel .

geography

The mountain is located where the Freital basin slowly narrows to Plauenschen Grund . To the north it turns into the Burgwartsberg . At the foot of the Sauberges, Wiederitz and Weißeritz are located, the valley of the Wiederitz forms the southwestern boundary and the Weißeritz valley the eastern boundary of the elevation. The sometimes quite steep slope down to Potschappel is at the level of the porcelain factory, close to Carl-Thieme-Straße and the Dresden – Werdau railway line . On the northeastern edge, the "Burgwartstraße" touches the Sauberg and leads in an approx. 800 meter long ascent to the Burgwartschänke on the mountain.

Finds from the 1930s show the early use of the Sauberge as a burial place. The cultivation of hops played a major role in the later agricultural use of the survey . Hopfenberg developed as a casual name that was used until the 19th century . the exact origin of the name Sauberg is not clear. The industrialization also left at Sauberg tracks so that was in 1886 along the Wiederitz Narrow Gauge Railway Freital-Potschappel-Nossen built, the porcelain factory opened already in 1872. At today's "Wigardstraße" was the food factory "Werner's".

Starting in low Pesterwitz the Sauberg developed gradually and the construction site of homes. Today's Burgwartstrasse was laid out in the 1890s and from then on formed the starting point for construction activities in the south-west of the mountain. The large housing estate between Burgwartschänke and Potschappel was created in the 1930s. The streets there today bear the names of famous artists and writers, so there is a Lucas-Cranach, Albrecht-Dürer, Thomas-Mann and a Beethovenstraße on the Sauberg.

On the slope of Potschappel, the Sauberg gym was built in 1926, which is now used by students from the Gotthold-Ephraim-Lessing School in Potschappel and is a listed building.
