Surname

The word "Saucon" (see "History" section) comes from the Native American language and means "fast flowing river".

history

In 1898, four businessmen founded the Saucony company on the banks of the Saucon River in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Twelve years later, Abraham Hyde independently opened a shoe store under the name AR Hyde & Sons. The company produces slippers made from leftovers from flooring and clothing that have been a huge hit. Another 22 years later, in 1932, Hyde expanded the range with roller skates . This is the manufacturer's first footwear specifically designed for a sport. A short time later, in 1938, the Hyde Athletic range was expanded to include baseball and bowling shoes as well as roller skates. After the outbreak of World War II, Hyde began producing boots for the American armed forces from 1942. A milestone in the company's history was marked in 1963, when the Hyde company manufactured the shoes that were worn for the first time by an American astronaut during a space walk. The merger with Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer of running shoes, took place five years later. Saucony achieved great fame in 1977 when the company's shoes received the prestigious “Best Quality Award” from a US magazine. The popularity that followed established Saucony's reputation. Three years later, Saucony presented the 'Trainer 80', the first non-slip running shoe on the market. Shortly thereafter, Saucony presented the 'Jazz', which was the most technically advanced running shoe of its time. This was also the first shoe to feature the signature Saucony fit.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the 'Shadow 6000' was introduced, which has a combination of a molded EVA and PU midsole, which offered maximum cushioning and comfort. At the same time, Saucony introduced the grid system, the first cushioning system that combines cushioning and stability. The Saucony brand was actually born in 1998, when Hyde Athletic Industries, Inc. officially changed its name to Saucony, Inc. The flexion plate technology in the Grid Sinister and in the ProGrid Paramount are particularly worth mentioning as milestones in the 21st century. The Flexion Plate technology is awarded the “International Best Innovation Award” from Runner's World Magazine. In 2009 Saucony won further shoe awards: “Best Update” for the ProGrid Stabil CS, “Best Debut” for the ProGrid Echelon and the “Editor's Choice Award” for the ProGrid Omni 8.
