Savage (2007)

Savage (born June 28, 1981 in Auckland as Demetrius Chris Savelio ) is a New Zealand rapper of Samoan descent.

biography

Savage founded the hip-hop group Deceptikonz in 1996 with three other rappers from his hometown . In 2002 they released their debut album. Just a year later, Mareko, the first member, successfully released a solo album. Savage followed suit in 2005 and made his solo debut. With his first single Swing! he had a big hit that was number one on the New Zealand charts for five weeks and also aroused interest in Australia. With the second single Moon Shine , for which he was able to win the collaboration of the US musician Akon , he was even at the top for seven weeks. Both singles achieved platinum status. The debut album Moonshine reached number two and contained another hit with They Don't Know , in which the singer Aaradhna was involved.

After another album with Deceptikonz, the song Swing was discovered for the US comedy The First Time , which was released in 2007. Savage then re-recorded the piece with US rapper Soulja Boy and released it in the United States the following year. The single came to number 45 on the US singles chart and sold over a million times. The song is also included in this version on the rapper's second album entitled Savage Island , which was released in New Zealand and the USA in 2009. It reached number 76 on the US R&B / Hip-Hop charts. It came in at number 9 in its home country and produced three chart singles , including the swing remix.

After another interlude with Deceptikonz, Savage worked on his third solo album Mayhem & Miracles , which was released in June 2012. However, this could not build on its predecessor and only came in 25th in New Zealand. There were no single successes. In return, Swing became a hit a third time a year later. This time the Australian DJ Joel Fletcher took on the song and released his remix in his homeland. It came to number 2 on the Australian charts and was awarded triple platinum.

In 2014 it was again an Australian who gave Savage another hit. Up-and-coming DJ Timmy Trumpet had a minor hit in his homeland early in the year with his piece Freaks . In the middle of the year he brought Savage in and recorded the song again with his rap accompanist. It was then freaks to number three hit in Australia and New Zealand, the rapper came for the third time at No. 1 . This time the single was also released in Europe and hit the charts in some countries around the turn of the year.
