The United States Geological Survey mapped it using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1961 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after Samuel M. Savin, a glaciologist on Byrd Station between 1965 and 1966.
